the most questions we had from travellers
Planning a trip to Tanzania opens up a world of adventure, from encountering diverse wildlife to scaling breathtaking mountains and relaxing on beautiful beaches. This guide addresses the top 10 frequently asked questions for those preparing to embark on a safari, climb a mountain, or enjoy a beach vacation in Tanzania, each offering a unique and diverse experience.
The optimal time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, from January to mid-March and June to October. These months provide better weather conditions with clearer skies and less rain, making the climb more enjoyable and safe.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is challenging but attainable for most individuals with good physical fitness. It doesn't require technical climbing skills, but the primary challenge is the high altitude, which can lead to altitude sickness. Adequate acclimatization, preparation, and pacing are crucial for success.
While technical skills are not necessary, it's advisable to have good cardiovascular fitness and stamina. Training should focus on long hikes, walking at elevation, and strengthening leg muscles. Prior hiking experience is helpful but optional, as many first-timers have reached the summit.
Essential items to pack include proper hiking boots, layered clothing (including warm layers for summit night), a sleeping bag, headlamp, sunglasses, sun protection, a first-aid kit, trekking poles, and a high-quality backpack. Bring water bottles or a hydration pack, as staying hydrated is crucial.
It is mandatory to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with a licensed guide and crew. All trekkers must be accompanied by an organized tour operator, which provides guides, porters, and support staff to ensure a safe and successful climb.
The climb typically takes 5 to 9 days, depending on the chosen route and the time allocated for acclimatization. Longer routes, such as the Lemosho and Machame routes, are recommended as they allow for better acclimatization and increase the chances of a successful summit.
Apart from Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania offers several other climbing destinations. Mount Meru, located in Arusha National Park, is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and provides a challenging trek with stunning views of Kilimanjaro. The Usambara Mountains and the Udzungwa Mountains also provide scenic hiking opportunities, are rich in biodiversity and beautiful landscapes, and are perfect for adventurous climbers and nature enthusiasts.
